CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

KATE

Kate had always feared the aftermath of Matthew’s death. She’d always known that she’d have an incredibly large hole to fill and she’d imagined herself listless not knowing what to do.

Perhaps Matthew had known that when he’d had a go at being Cupid and scored a goal with his first arrow.

Instead of being maudlin, Kate was spending time with Theo. They’d been hanging out with each other whenever they had the chance and had participated in some more regular dates: the cinema, bowling, a meal at a pub. Often finishing by returning to Theo’s flat over Kate’s house share.

This evening, Kate was about to meet Theo’s sister, Anita, for the first time for a meal out. Anita hadn’t wanted Kate to meet her son, George, straightaway, and Kate knew why. It was in case things didn’t last. It would be horrid to meet the kid one minute and for her not to be about the next. She was being sussed out on this meeting, she knew that. And she didn’t mind the cautiousness. Everything had happened at a quicker than average pace. They’d gone from being complete strangers to a couple who went on weekends away together in less than a month. They certainly weren’t going to be the first or last couple to go into a relationship at that pace and the circumstances of how they’d met and come together seemed to have set them into fast-forward mode.

‘Lovely to meet you,’ Kate said as soon as they arrived at the Indian restaurant Theo had booked.

‘It’s great to meet you as well.’ Anita got up and gave Kate a warm hug with a kiss on either cheek thrown in for good measure. The reception was so friendly it made the tension in her shoulders release a little.

‘So tell me all about yourself! I want to know everything about the woman who’s been holding my brother’s attention.’

Kate glanced over to Theo, trying to gauge if he’d told his sister anything about her.

‘What would you like to know?’

‘Where you’ve been for starters? I’ve been patiently waiting for him to meet someone for years.’

Kate smiled and knew she was beginning to blush so she answered quickly in the hope it would distract from any signs of nervousness. ‘I’m a nurse so I work bank shifts for the respiratory ward there. I’m sure Theo has told you that my brother had cystic fibrosis and passed away recently.’ An unexpected lump in her throat formed. It was the first time she’d had to tell someone who might not have known and it was too soon to say those words without it hurting.

‘He did. I’m really sorry to hear that.’

‘So tell me about you? The things Theo has told me have mainly revolved around George.’ Kate wanted to divert away from the subject of Matthew. In her current state, it was going to be the best thing to do. She didn’t want to burst into tears on her first interaction with Theo’s sister.

‘Ha! That’s so true.
